Best pub and grub in Wellington

Faced with so much choice, visitors to New Zealand might struggle to quickly find the best places for pub and grub . . . but at great cost to wallet and waistline, NZHT's team of researchers has hunted them down for you.

Best pub in Wellington

The Malthouse (48 Courtenay Place) is at the hub of Wellington's central pub and restaurant area, and the ideal place to start (or finish) a night out.

It offers a 22-page menu of more than 200 beers, with explanations and recommendations in the menu to ensure everyone can find at least one tipple to their liking.

The pub has up to 20 beers on tap, specialising in New Zealand craft beers, and the fridge is stacked with bottled beers from countries around the world.

Your biggest problem will be choosing which beer.

The Malthouse won the Beer & Brewer Magazine's 2010 Best Venue in Australia and New Zealand Award.

Grub - Best fish and chips in Wellington

For fish and chips, it's worth the drive to Lower Hutt to see out So Fine Seafoods (2 Tennyson Ave), perennial nominees in the national fish and chip awards, while you can find good fish and chips near Parliament Buildings, at Starfish (138 Molesworth Street).

Grub - Best pies in Wellington

Two to try - Nada Bakery (64 Johnsville Rd) and Elite Bakery & Café (175 Victoria Street). The latter is noted for its steak and cheese pies.

Grub - Other delights in Wellington

For some of the best breads in New Zealand, visit Arobake (83 Aro St) - they've earned awards including gold medals for their sour dough.

Grub - Best restaurant in Wellington

Wellington has arguably the best restaurants in New Zealand - certainly the city wins more than its share of awards and accolades.

Noteworthy restaurants include Ambeli (18 Majoribanks Street, Mt Victoria) and Arbitrageur (125 Featherston Street, city).

Ambeli, which offers a Mediterranean-based menu, is a winner of the country's Best Smart Dining (Metropolitan) award, while Arbitrageur offers a wine room, restaurant and oyster bar. It's also an award-winner, being recognised as Best Casual (Metropolitan).
