Best pub and grub in Auckland

Faced with so much choice, visitors to Auckland in New Zealand might struggle to quickly find the best places for pub and grub . . . but at great cost to wallet and waistline, NZHT's team of researchers has hunted them down for you.

Best pub in Auckland

If you like real beer - the stuff that hasn't had the flavour gassed and chilled out of it - there's no better pub in Auckland than Galbraith's Alehouse.

Situated close to the central city, at 2 Mt Eden Rd, Grafton, the alehouse (ph 09 379 3557) is an Auckland institutions for beer purists and those who like to experiment with the wide range of guest beers they provide.

Brewers Keith Galbraith and Ian Ramsay make a range of their own beers on the premises, and rotate beers from the rest of New Zealand on their taps, as well as providing a wide range of bottled beers to suit every palate.

The food is especially good for pub fare and the premises are clean, spacious and comfortable.

Grub - Best fish and chips in Auckland

Auckland has a number of Oceanz-branded fish and chip shops, all with a reputation for crisp golden chips and perfectly battered fish. Check out the Oceanz at Ti Rakau Drive, Botany Downs, as this was a grand finalist in the 2011 fish and chip shop of the year.

Another worth checking out is The Chip Shop, in Royal Oak, which was a finalist in 2010 and highly recommended in 2011.

Grub - Best pies in Auckland

After you've enjoyed your fish and chips in Botany Downs, head up the road to the corner of Ti Rakau Drive and Te Irirangi Drive. There you'll find Greenland Bakery and Café, home of the 2011 national champion gourment meat pie.

Lovers of steak, veg and gravy can find the pie judged to be the country's best in that category in 2011 at Penny Lane Bakery, 248 Onehunga Mall, Onehunga.

If you're heading south, pull over at Pukekohe (45 minutes from central Auckland) and try the pies at Pak N Save Supermarket. The supermarket won 2011 national pie awards for bacon & egg, mince & cheese and seafood. So don't be put off by the fact they are made in a supermarket - they are superb.

And vegetarians heading north of Auckland will find the country's top award-winning vegetarian pie at Dairy Flat Bakery, 1443 State Highway, Albany.

Grub - Other delights

Bacon lovers should check out Grey Lynn Butchery, 531 Great North Road, Grey Lynn. They've won multiple national awards for their bacons and are something of a local legend.

For fresh meat cut and prepared the traditional way, head to Westmere Butchery, 131 West End Rd, Westmere. They frequently top Auckland surveys to find the best butchery, and deservedly so.

Grub - Best Pizza in Auckland

Auckland's award-winning pizza makers include Blitz Pizza (9 Birkenhead Ave. Birkenhead), Eduardo's (483 Khyber Pass Road), Adelie Bar & Kitchen (129 West End Rd, Westmere), and for New York-style pizza, head to Epolito's Pizza (1 Rawhiti Rd, One Tree Hill).
