Roadside Stops

Pelorus Bridge

Half way between Nelson and Picton on State Highway 6, Pelorus Bridge is a stunning place to stop. Break your journey in the large, grassy picnic area perched above a bend in the river on the Picton side of the bridge.

Lake Pukake

The Stunning turquoise blue water of the lake has to be seen to be believed. Great views across to Mount Cook from the lookout point. Good opportunity to take plenty of pictures here and at the various stopping points along State Highway 8 to Tekapo. Lake Pukake is on the road through Mackenzie Country from Wanaka to Christchurch.

Lake Matheson

Classic views of Mount Cook from the lakeside, together with a variety of lovely lakeside walks and a great cafe make this a must. Wonderful and tranquil in the early morning. Turn off the main road just as you enter Fox from Franz Josef.

Lake Ianthe

Good place to break up the long drive between Greymouth and the glaciers on the east coast of the South Island. Stop at the grassy lakeside picnic area on Lake Ianthe between Ross and Harihari and enjoy the views.

Cardrona

On the more direct but less travelled route between Wanaka and Queenstown. Rest at Cardrona after driving the gentle gradient from Wanaka and before the steep, highly scenic descent down into Queenstown past Crown Peak. Enjoy the mountain scenery, the abundant wild lupins in summer on this unusual but worthwhile route.
