Best Ice Creams in New Zealand

Ice creams that taste like an English toffee and maple walnut have been judged to be the best in New Zealand for 2014.

From 302 entries, the 18th judging of the annual New Zealand Ice Cream Awards sorted out a range of category winners and two Supreme Award winners.

The Supreme Award for a Large Manufacturer went to New Zealand Natural for New Zealand Natural English Toffee, described as "smooth and luscious with connotations of old fashioned Werther's Originals."

The Supreme Award for a Boutique Manufacturer was awarded to Rush Munro's for their Maple Walnut Ice Cream.

The judges said they were impressed with the freshness of the walnuts and the balance in maple and nut flavours complemented by a smooth creamy texture.

New Zealand's fondness for chocolate ice cream was reflected by the 28 variations of chocolate-flavoured ice creams entered into the awards. These include peanut butter, cookies, truffles and carob. The category was won by Gelatiamo's Dutch Chocolate Gelatomade.

To challenge the judges, the Open Creative categories in ice cream and gelato/sorbet included some clever and different flavours. In the Ice Cream category these included pandan and coconut meat, red bean and rose flavoured tea, sour cream and peppercorn and chill flake flavours. Equally as creative were the Open Creative Gelato/Sorbet entries with Sage and burnt butter, watermelon and cucumber, kale, mint and apple and Bourbon and smoke.

The winner across the two sections of the Open Creative category was the White Chocolate and Wasabi made by New Zealand Best & Pure T/A KK New Zealand.
