New Zealand's best sausage in 2012 was made by a Wellington butchery.

Island Bay & Strathmore Butcheries' speciality sausage, the Smoked Kielbasa, won the title of the nation's number one banger at the 2012 Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition.

The annual awards are keenly contested by butchers who take great pride in turning out a decent sausage.

A pork and fennel gourmet sausage was judged to be the best sausage in New Zealand for 2010.

The maker of the sausage, Mediterranean Wholesale Market in Wanaka, was named Supreme Award winner at the 2010 Great New Zealand Sausage Competition.

The inaugural People's Choice Award went to Peter Timbs Meats in Christchurch for their beef sausage.

Best Sausages in New Zealand 2009

The sausage judged to be the best in New Zealand in 2009 came from Christchurch. It was a mango & chilli chicken sausage made by Peter Timbs Meats, of Edgeware Rd, and was the 2009 Supreme Award Winner in The Great New Zealand Sausage Competition.

Chief Judge Kerry Tyack described the sausage, which also won a gold in the Gourmet category as "a superb combination of chicken, mango and chilli, resulting in a sweet and spicy sausage with huge palate appeal."

Mango and chilli chicken was one of 12 gold medal winning sausages in the competition.
