Best Takeaways in Auckland

Auckland is a foodie's heaven - and especially if you're looking for top food on the run. The city's takeaway food is outstanding and local operators vie for various awards and customer acclaim. The NZ Herald newspaper's Viva Magazine gives annual awards for the food outlets it considers to be the best in their class, and latest winners include:

Overall winner

Dragonfired Artisan Woodfired Food (Little Oneroa Beach, Waiheke Island)
This food trailer is run by Bevan Kaan, one of Auckland's most respected macrobiotic chefs, and it serves a range of dishes usually atop Italian pizza bases or in Mexican bread pockets. The business uses whole foods and is entirely organic, and operates without power - just woodfire to cook with.

Spicy stuff

Thai Yum Food Hut
23 Birkenhead Ave, Birkenhead
Zingy food without MSG, and good value for money.

40 Beach Rd, Britomart
A favourite with downtown workers, this tiny outlet serves up spicy food using fresh ingredients.

Zap 4
10 Commerce St, City
Specialises in Esan Thai cuisine which tends to pack more of a punch than most Asian takeaways.

Al Volo
27 Mt Eden Rd, Grafton
Fully licensed and their woodfired pizzas are large (30cm), tasty and use authentic thin and crispy bases.

Dante's Real Woodfired Pizza
316 Main Rd, Huapai
A bit out of the way but worth the drive from central Auckland. Authentic Italian pizza straight from the woodfired oven.

Fish and chips

Catch a Fish
6/64 Gladstone Rd, Parnell
Known for their crispy golden battered fish and their chips that are fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside.

The Chip Shop Ltd
711 Manukau Rd, Royal Oak
The judges rated their chips as the best in Auckland, but also enthused about the wide range of deep fried fare on offer.

Herne Bay Fish Mart
260 Jervois Rd, Herne Bay
If you're a fan of squid rings, this is the place, according to the Viva judges.

New Flavour
541 Dominion Rd, Mt Eden
Handmade every day with a dozen variations that come steamed or fried. Pork and cabbage dumplings are the standout.

Hulu Tea-House
28 Anzac Ave, City
Prawn dumplings are the speciality but the place is popular and it can sell out early.

Burger Fuel
61 Tamaki Drive, Mission Bay
Serves outstanding burgers and provides customers with excellent premises and real China plates to eat them on!

Ponsonby Fresh Fish & Chips
127 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby

Neighbourhood outdoor eateries

Auckland Night Market
Westfield Pakuranga Plaza, 2 Aylesbury St, Pakuranga
More than 50 food stalls set up every Saturday night, from 6pm till midnight, offering all sorts of local and ethnic foods.

Top In Town Indian Takeaways
586 Sandringham Rd, Sandringham
Known for its biryani and tandoori specialities. Viva recommends the goat biryani and chicken 65 - a secret recipe of herbs and spices that the magazines says is 'nothing short of sensational'.

7 Siri - Taste of Sri Lanka
64 Stoddard Rd, Mt Roskill
Found tucked away inside a supermarket plaza, this is the place for authentic Sri Lankan fare.

Ice cream/Gelato

Valentino's Gelato
99 Quay St, City
By the water near the downtown Ferry Building, this is the place to find a huge range of flavours and then sit and lick your sweet treat watching the world go by.

279 Queen St, City
The judges like its gelato but also its style - loud music, attitude and lots of creations using fresh organic ingredients.
