Great ways to travel on holiday in New Zealand

Auckland - Passenger ferry to Devonport

Cheap and quick with great views of Auckland harbour and its skyline. You can't visit Auckland without viewing the city from the water and this is the easiest and most memorable way to do it. Stop for tea in Devonport if you have time.

Cook Strait Ferry from Wellington to Picton

Enjoy views of Wellington Harbour as you leave and watch out for the crazy windsurfers as they zip across the bay dodging the ships. On deck you can feel Windy Wellington in all its glory. All this contrasts with the serenity, tranquility and sheer beauty of the route through the Marlborough Sounds to Picton. Surely this is one of the great ferry rides of the world and without doubt the best way to arrive in the South island.

Water taxi in the Abel Tasman National Park

The only way to see this beautiful coastline. Take a water taxi from Kaiteriteri or Motueka with a friendly, experienced crew. Enjoy the commentary as you pick your way through seals and dolphins along the coast. Be sure to arrange for the taxi to drop you off on a beach so you can walk through the national park and be picked up again by the taxi at another beach. The further along the coast you travel on the taxi the greater the chances of seeing dolphins.

Small plane to Milford Sound

Treat yourself to the spectacular views of the Southern Alps, hidden valleys of Fjordland and the amazing aerial entrance to Milford Sound. Enjoy the thrill of riding in a small plane with your pilot's informal and informative commentary in your earphones. If you are pushed for time this is a great way too to avoid the twelve hour road trip to Milford Sound from Queenstown with all the coaches and associated tedium.

Helicopter up onto the Fox or Franz Josef glaciers

Nowhere else in the world will you be able to so easily take a helicopter from the coast up onto a glacier in a rainforest. This is such a unique experience that it is a must do for all travellers journeying down the east coast. Better still if you opt to get out and experience an hour or two on the glacier before returning again in your helipcopter.
